Officials are expected to make an announcement at the National Brownfield Conference next month regarding redevelopment of the BASF site at 1700 Caniff.

The proposed development is a collection and processing center for a new biological supply company, modeled after Carolina Biological Supply. The company will provide supplies to science classrooms at schools and colleges for study, including locally grown bacterias, viruses, and plants. The center is also expected to purchase "specimens" from the Wayne County animal shelter.

The venture is being made possible through the technology transfer office of a state university, and is expected to create 200 jobs in the life sciences sector. It will be first facility of it's kind in Michigan.

UPDATE: Happy April Fools' Day.

About a year ago, a local character told me he was thinking about getting a cat, and then pulled out a catalog from a company that sells cat and cat in a box.

One of the earlier incarnations of this post was titled, "More than one way to skin a cat". I picked that particular property because it was a candidate for the new county animal shelter at one time. I considered adding that the city would be contracting with the company for animal control services.

How sad. Because these animals will not be genetically identical they will be used for the most wasteful and painful types of experiments, eg. LD50 and Draize Eye tests. How unfortunate that Wayne County is providing a further incentive (financial) to kill rather than save homeless animals.

This was a hoax. The poor shelter is still overwhelmed with foreclosure pets, and everyone should adopt a dog or send them a donation.
