I have predicted the result that came out, however one thing I have shocked that Hassan made it, it should have been either Allan or Anam, Anam is way brighter and smarter then HASSAN. As far as investigation regarding about vote casting, it came down to Absentee Ballots, Since she lead Dr. Al Ganzali almost double, I think it safe to say that "election was fare share". One advice I will give to Mr. Dr. Alganzali, next time pick your slate better then Hassan, he is a double standard SOB. Dr. Alganzali lost cause of Hassan, just like Primary election results outcome. Thank god Rahman lost the primaries. Didn't think Hassan would make it. I think Anam would've been better that Hassan. Hassan has no intention of doing good for the city. I bet he can't control his own backyard, let alone the fact he'll be in part of city council? give me a break!

Every winner deserves our respect and hopefully this time there will be more productive outcomes from the council. Picking on Hassan is unfair and if you think he was not the right candidate then you should have worked for other candidates. Best English does not necessarily get the best results. I suppose writers with pseudo name should be deleted. I consider, using pseudo name is kind of hiding perspective. A person who does not have courage to reveal his or her real identity. Now and in the past I have been disturbed by some coward pseudo name who are not curragious to reveal their name.
I may disagree with some newly elected officials. One do not have to like everyone or some individuals neither have to be agree with everyone, however there should be some respect. I do not intend to take any side, neither I like to make any comment about anybody’s personality. However, one of the comments, I must address, some pseudo name writer raised the issue of smartness.. I must say, definition of smartness always varies and depends, so does even the definition of education and knowledge.
One of the fundamental definition of education is, as long as a person knows how to do his or her job that person considered smart and educated in his or her field. No one could be educated in everything. The only question is if the person is knowledgeable to do his or her job.
If a candidate know how to win his or her election he or she is smart in his or her job. I must respect and congratulate all winners as they are smart enough to win. Now we will see how they do performing their job. Before letting them do their job no one has any moral or ethical right to criticize their capability, making any comment right now will be unfair.
In definition of smartness I must also say, if smartness or intellect is defined in certain ways, and leadership or winning in election requires certain academic or specific intellects then Bill Gates or a Harvard Professor must be US president or congressman or senator. The 3 top votes getter are totally new. Same here in Hamtramck, the first I would like to congratulate new comers. Council member elect Kazi Mia and Mohammad Hassan. Kazi Mia deserves special thanks for being successful as top vote getters. I also congratulate my long term friend and leader Tom Jankowski. I am certain, we needed people like Tom, his experience and connections. Even personally I was privileged to work with him for over 4 years as his appointee. I may disagree a few things he does however, I admire his strength and compassion for the city. GOD JOB BUDDY. I must congratulate Mayor Karen Majweski for her victory, same again we may disagree with many things, however , for the best interest of the city, citizens, community. For inclusiveness, Mutual Respect, Peace WE MUST WORK TOGETHER.

I think Anam Ahemd Miah Deserve appreciation as well. I believe many of you hear me saying, which I have also mentioned in my article before primary that if you have an opportunity to listen to Anam Miah you will be impressed to see his wisdom. I was very impressed when first time I spoke with him over a year ago. Anam is well versed, cum, modest and respectful. I believe I have mentioned it to many people including Hillary and John as well.
However, campaign is very important in any election. People need to know you in person. That is one of the key. You have to be with people almost all the time. It always takes time, people takes time to understand a candidate. One of the famous Election strategist and campaign expert mentioned campaigning as like dating.. lol.
YES, I must thank Anam Ahmed Miah for his good try. And I do have faith that, God may have some better plan for him.

I find it interesting that all candidates had a good share of the votes, it was pretty close relatively speaking. every councilperson got 1200-1600 votes each, thats pretty equally distributed, and there was barely more than 100 votes separating Algazali and Majewski. It just shows how important voter turnout is, I mean what if 2 more people per block voted they could have pushed Algazali to the top.

Hello everyone, Great election, right! wrong...
I have lived in Hamtramck for about 6 years now and I was very happy to see the turn out for the election.

Last night I was talking to few of my bangali friends about the election and how the numbers just did not add up.

One of my friend started to talk about how few of the candidates ran a dirty campaign, where they were getting many possibly few hundreds of people from neighboring city Detroit and warren to Change their address just for the election. One individual that won the election I will not name here, has personally promised people favors and has personally taken people to the secretary of state to change their address and has promised them that after the election he will help them change the address to the primary resident.


Isn’t there a law or something out there against people like that, shouldn’t people have legal rights before changing their address such as owning a property or rental lease agreement or something. Just by this information coming from someone who is well informed about the community here in Hamtramck and the numbers compared for the individual voters does not add up.

Someone needs to investigate this fraud, I am not a lawyer I’m sure someone here is and hope they will take on this challenge and support the city where to keep the politicians honest and are free of fraudulent activity and not risk having Hamtramck become Detroit, as I have read an article in the newspaper recently which is more likely since our tax revenue has dropped and there is no room in the city to grow.
I am very sure when serious challenges facing the city its gonna be tough for everyone, but at least some of the voters do not have to worry because now they have changed their address back to their primary cities, and can give a dam about hamtramck and what happens here.

Even if everything Abdul Refi alleges is true, it still wouldn't amount to voter fraud under any current laws. Hamtramck needs to change its ordinances and a add a minimum residency requirement as a prerequisite to voting in its municipal elections.

Bengali people and their crooked minds, always trying to figure out a way to bend or break the system for their personal benefits, not caring about who they hurt in the process. As long as it's not them.

I see there are certain people here posting comments about obtaining a GED and to learn English. It is very easy to tell who is illiterate here and who isn't just by the way you spell certain words. And since when did obtaining a job in a Casino become such a privilege? I bet the bengalis working there are bending the system to steal money.

1) Everyone who knows Hassan well says that he is a brilliant person. My primary concern about Hassan's English proficiency is his ability to read and understand city contracts and oversee their execution, which is what the city council is supposed to do. Virtually everything he has said at council meetings has been based on his misunderstanding of the situation. I must give him credit for listening to people when they explain things though. Maybe he will do a great job.

2) Proposal O was an operating millage for Wayne County. (Money to run the jail, the sheriff's department, the prosecutor's office, the health department, etc.)

3) I hear allegations of election fraud after every election. That is how we got into that voter discrimination lawsuit in the 1990s. The old school Hamtramckans believed that Solidarity was helping people change their addresses from Dearborn and Detroit every other year in order to vote in elections in both cities.

More than a month ago, people were telling me that Solidarity set up a storefront on Joseph Campau in order to change addresses for people from Ferndale. Today, the allegation is Detroit and Warren. If anyone has information, they should go to City Hall and talk to our election clerk. I absolutely believe that Marie is following the letter of the law, and that she can tell you what information you need to file a complaint.

4) Mahfuz: Now is a "teachable moment" for explaining internal Bengali politics to the other readers. As I understand it, most Bangladeshi immigrants to Hamtramck are from Sylhet, specifically the city Beanibaazar, which means "morning market". People not from Sylhet are outsiders somewhat, and the attacks on Hassan above are a product of that conflict.

Luckily for us, Anam Miah is a current member of the Zoning Board of Appeals, and he will be able to continue serving there. He is doing a good job on that board.

BTW... I had too much going on last night, but I heard that there was a budget meeting at City Hall. The city manager proposed cutting police officers and firemen to fill the budget gap. Cathie Gordon suggested passing a cost recovery ordinance to increase revenue, and getting rid of the events coordinator, the DDA manager, the redundant city assessor, the second supervisor at the DPW, the DDA, the EDC, and the BRA. The rest of the council just sat there and didn't say a word.

It's like they're trying to waste money.

I am from Sylhet. Technically, I'm not, but my parents are. At any rate, people like "Sylhety" are a disgrace to not only Bangladeshi people, but the human race. He hasn't made an intelligent comment yet and should not be the face of Sylhet. Quite simply, he is upset that Hassan has accomplished so much and that he has accomplished nothing.

Hillary, unfortunately, you are right about the conflict. However, most of the people from Sylhet that consider others outsiders do so because of their own ignorance and lack of a good upbringing. Most likely, their parents and grandparents were farmers or working as housekeepers. This lack of education, opportunity, and good communication has incited class resentment and straight-up ignorance. A very good number of people from Beanibaazar are uneducated and cling to their old cowboy ways of their parents and their motherland. Don't let them be the gauge of all people from Sylhet.

Moe, while I agree with you in that working at a casino is nothing to write home about, I do not, however, agree with your blanket statement about Bangladeshi people trying to bend or break the system. While you may be hemming and hawing about it, you have provided no evidence or even an anecdote about such occurrences. Yes, I'm sure there are some rouge people out there who also happen to be from Bangladesh, but that's not to say that they do what they do because they're from Bangladesh.

Crooks can come from any background. I am sure not just the Bangladeshis but all of the crooks in Hamtramck combined cannot come near what Bernie Madoff stole ($50 bn) from all of you! Cheer up; There are a lot of good people in Hamtramck.

I believe there is a minimum residency requirement to vote in Hamtramck. When I was voting on Tuesday, I witnessed a person attempting to vote who had recently changed his/her address from Detroit to Hamtramck (two weeks before the election, according to the voter). The voter was told to go vote in Detroit, that no one was allowed to vote in Hamtramck until s/he had been a resident for at least 30 days.

Hi hillary, you may not know Hassan, he been doing the supervisor, Manager and Engineering job for related to big three last 10 years. Now the question is here if he doesn’t know read and write English how he gets the job. Personally I know he is making very close to your city manager, you can see his tax file report from Hamtramck city. He has Master degree with fist class 5th position. Remember Bangladesh University you can get admission if you not talent and not having good score. Again Bangladesh doesn’t accept any online degree like USA. There is the difference between Bangladesh degree and USA degree. You are the one start with English about him remember no matter what good English you can not have the good job like him with out degree. If he knows how to take care of industry belief me he can take care of Hamtramck city. Thanks.

I have read through the comments in here and have one suggestion.

We all need to improve this city, one way or another. We need to have some policies in place to keep the people working for us honest and productive.

Regardless of how much they are getting paid, its our tax money and we should require some results and productivity from these individuals and not have them just sleep in during the meetings and get paid for it.

I will repeat what I said before about the voters, this person moved here from NY some 15 years ago and have been living in Hamtramck since, and I don’t think this individual would lie or make-up a story like this unless it was true.

I will be moving out of the city soon so this really doesn’t affect me much, just thought educated people like yourselves should know what is going on around you.
