Sidestreet Deli and Ultimate Fashion lost to fire
WDIV reported "an early morning fire", which "destroyed two businesses and closed a major roadway in Hamtramck". On this evening's broadcast they reported that the fire "may be arson" and that "one of the two businesses destroyed was a dry-cleaning company". We're not aware of a dry cleaner in the area.
WXYZ's story reported that the fire started in Ultimate Fashion, on the corner.
We were there taking photos at about 4:30 and saw the owners of Hamtramck Smoke Shoppe moving out boxes.

I have to wonder what Local 4 based their statement that the fire may have been arson. The owner of the building thought it might be an electrical fire, but didn't know how or where the fire started.
It's sad anyway. I read somewhere that a deli has been in that space for over 80 years.

I have some photos before the plywood went up if you would like them. I don't know how to contact you aside from posting here.

That was a nice little deli. I hope that the owners rebuild and wish them luck. Did they have insurance and are they able to rebuild?

I am shocked and genuinely saddened. These sorts of losses are tough to bounce back from, for patrons and proprietors alike. Let's all give them a good reason to rebuild..
Long live Skippy's/Salvador/Sidestreet Deli.

I liked Salvador. It will be missed... Unless, of course, it comes back, in which case it will be patronized, and I mean that in a good way.

For many years, it was Zukin's Deli. They had an extensive sandwich menu, with numbered selections (many with kosher corned beef and/or pastrami on rye). One of their specialties was matzah(sc) ball soup, which was a favorite of many local shop owners, going back to the 70's and even earlier, I believe.

Wow, that is horrible news. I loved the Sidestreet Deli. I hope the owners are able to rebound from this.

Thanks for the info, Julie. I think the medicine shop is alright. The fire chief said the fire was stopped by a firewall between Ultimate Fashion, but there must be smoke damage at the Smoke Shoppe. The guys were wearing respirator masks while they carried the merchandise out.

We'll have to wait and see if everyone was insured. The building owner wasn't crying when he got there, so I assume he'll be alright. The deli came under new ownership only two weeks ago. Let's hope all of the insurance issues from the sale were resolved.

I thought we had more photos of the inside of the deli, but this was the only one I could find. Here's one of Ultimate Fashion taken on the same day.
