creating flash video files from avi
By admin on Nov 20, 2006 | In Linux | Send feedback »
UPDATE: This makes rather large flv files. See this post for a better two-pass encoding.
I've worked through many permutations to create .flv video files from my dv camera. For this round I captured with dvgrab in .dv format. I edited the clips in kino and exported to avi format.
I then created the .flv files with mencoder:
mencoder input.avi -ffourcc FLV1 -of lavf -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=flv:acodec=mp3:abitrate=56 -srate 22050 -oac lavc -lavcopts acodec=mp3:abitrate=32 -lavfopts i_certify_that_my_video_stream_does_not_use_b_frames -vop scale=360:240 -o output.flv
Then I created mpg files with ffmpeg:
ffmpeg -i input.avi -ar 22050 -ab 32 -s 320x240 output.mpg

Kip Hawley is an Idiot
By admin on Sep 28, 2006 | In General | 1 feedback »
via Slashdot
"A traveler frustrated with recent changes to airport security procedures found himself detained in Milwaukee after writing a message critical of the TSA's leader on a plastic bag presented for screening. The message, which read "Kip Hawley is an Idiot," resulted in a confrontation with law enforcement, the traveler being told that his right to freedom of speech applied only "out there (pointing past the id checkers) not while in here [the checkpoint]."
DeVos wants Intelligent Design in Michigan schools
By admin on Sep 21, 2006 | In Rants | Send feedback »
Detroit Free Press 09/20/06: DeVos: Science teachers should be allowed to present intelligent design
DeVos said exposing students to the concept of intelligent design -- viewed by most scientists as a non-scientific, religion-based belief -- would help them analyze competing theories.
Many educators and policymakers, including Gov. Jennifer Granholm, say they wouldn't object to discussing intelligent design - just not in science classes.
Using DeVos' logic, we might also introduce the theory about the earth being flat or the moon being made out of cheese. I believe those theories are competing and equally valid.

Waterboarding is torture and torture is wrong
By admin on Sep 15, 2006 | In Quotes | Send feedback »
All of our US servicemen (and women) can now expect to be tortured when captured. They can thank Porter Goss and the Bush administration. Our leaders are war criminals and they're putting Americans in grave, unnecessary danger.

The prisoner is bound to an inclined board, feet raised and head slightly below the feet. Cellophane is wrapped over the prisoner's face and water is poured over him. Unavoidably, the gag reflex kicks in and a terrifying fear of drowning leads to almost instant pleas to bring the treatment to a halt. According to the sources, CIA officers who subjected themselves to the water boarding technique lasted an average of 14 seconds before caving in. They said al Qaeda's toughest prisoner, Khalid Sheik Mohammed, won the admiration of interrogators when he was able to last over two minutes before begging to confess. "The person believes they are being killed, and as such, it really amounts to a mock execution, which is illegal under international law," said John Sifton of Human Rights Watch.

To correct a factual inaccuracy, Hamtramck isn't the only city to have an amplified call to prayer (Adhan). Mosques in Detroit have been broadcasting since the 70s and continue today.Hamtramck allows all religious sounds, including church bells which ring from St. Florian's and Imaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church (among others).
We also have a Hindu temple and a Zen Center which don't broadcast any religious noises.
THE HINDU TEMPLE WAS BURNED DOWN, PROBABLY BY MUSLIMS. SOUNDS LIKE YOU REALLY DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT HAMTRAMCK. THE CHURCH BELLS DON'T START AT FIVE IN THE MORNING AND GO TO TEN AT NIGHT. BELLS DON'T CHANT THAT ALLAH IS THE ONLY GOD. GET A CLUE. AND BY THE WAY, HAMTRAMCK IS THE ONLY CITY IN AMERICA TO OFFICIALLY SANCTION THE NOISE POLLUTION OF THE CALL TO PRAYER. IF YOU WANT TO BE A TOOL OF THE JIHAD, YOU ARE LIVING UP TO THE ROLE.

We are going to have to have muslim free zones.
Posted by: freewoman [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 13, 2006 11:37 AM
Maybe "freewoman" forgot about the US Constitution where it says:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
I suppose she'd be happier under a Fascist Theocracy. Ironic coming from someone who calls herself "freewoman".

But, rumorcontrol, we do have laws against criminals. And if islam is allowed to come to fruition, we WOULD be living in a fascist theocracy. We need to rid our country of people who want to destroy us.
Posted by: freewoman [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 13, 2006 11:50 AM
I didn't say we didn't have laws against criminals, that's a red herring.
Until you repeal the first amendment you're going to have to concentrate on the people who break the law, not on the religion they've chosen.
Why not the same venom for the Christians who blow up women's clinics? They to are fundementalist zealots who break the law. Why not "christian free" zones?
Posted by: RumorControl [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 13, 2006 11:56 AM
Rumorcontrol, do you fear Christians? Have any Christians threatened your very existence? Do Christians go around beheading people because they don't follow the same belief or just out of pure savagery? Bring up the bombing of the abortion clinic all you want, it was one man's doing, not from his church or synagague. And he was punished. Not revered. If we don't allow Nazi's and their ideology to run rampant in America, why allow islamics? Islam is an ideology and cult, not a religion.
Posted by: freewoman [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 13, 2006 12:06 PM
No, I fear fundementalist zealots of ALL religions. They are the true threat to freedom weather they're coming here to terrorize or if they live here and want to destroy freedoms afforded to us based on the Constitution.
We have the right to believe anything we like. The Nazi party operates freely in the US. So does StormFront, Aryian Nation, and the KKK. Just because an idea is unpopular or "wrong" doesn't mean you can't believe it.
If members of these groups break the law (act on their beliefs), then punishment is due them. You can't go hanging every degenerate based on his beliefs. This is America afterall.
I think you also are operating under some factual inaccuracies. All the violence against women's clinics weren't perpetrated by a single group or person. Educate yourself: http://www.religioustolerance.org/abo_viol.htm
Cults too are protected. You can belive anything you like but you can't break the law without consequences.

The ordinace that Hamtramck city council passed actually restricts religious sounds.
The Bosnian and Kosovar population in Hamtramck is not growing, it's declining. The 4000-5000 refugees came to Hamtramck through a program arranged with the Greater Detroit Hospital around 1999. Like other immigrant groups that come through Hamtramck, they fled fighting and persecution and now they're moving on.
Hamtramck has always been an immigrant town and we'll always be an immigrant town. Which immigrant group is next? It's hard to say but we're seeing more young russian and polish couples moving in.

Bangladeshi Mozlums have razed hundreds of Hindu temples to the ground in Bangladesh. The average Bangladeshi is a Taliban supporter, so its not surprising that when they are in majority, they love to burn down other places of worship. Remember, the Taliban demolished lots of Buddhist sculptures to reinforce their presence, even though those sculptures were around from the fifth century.

Ypsilanti Revolution II
By admin on Sep 11, 2006 | In Ypsilanti | 5 feedbacks »
My sincere apologies. I didn't appreciate the link until this afternoon.
I didn't associate it with an agenda, though I did think it could
generate some money for local causes. I thought of the merchandise as an Ypsi-pride type of slogan in which each individual would find his or her own meaning.I will remove the stuff today. Again, sorry for misappropriation. It was not intended.

Ypsilanti Revolution

Mr. Getto,
I was recently made aware of your slogan/cafepress design and subsequently read the post and comments regarding it.
I'd never copyrighted the phrase "the revolution starts here" so in terms of copyright there's no legal claim. (Not as if you're profitting from it personally).
I was surprised however by the claim that this idea was created by Barbara Zmich and not myself. It's difficult to believe that someone as politically involved at Ms. Zmich would have the idea independant of my copious writings about Ypsilanti (which are still published).
My fear is that someone will see your logo and associate it with my weblog, work work I'm proud of and stand behind. I'm guessing it is very different from any revolution you have in mind. Of course I'd never have sold anything as I think merchandising and especially cafepress is crass and their merchandise is chinese-imported landfill fodder made at the expense of slave labor.
I think that if you were setting out to accomplish the same goals as my Ypsilanti "Revolution" idea then it would make sense to, in your words, "re-claim" it. Instead I fear you will use the idea to highlight an adgenda of your own, not one associated with my original intention.
Your branding doesn't really differentiate from my work.
I think Barbara Zmich either had an unoriginal idea or stole mine. Either way I don't really like the fact that you're selling shwag that people will think that I had something to do with from cafepress.
What you do about it is of course up to you but I'm owed credit for the original idea at very least.
Regards,
Steven C
