Hamtramck scanner audio returns

The scanner is back online. Links to hourly summaries are under "Local Scanner Audio" on the sidebar (hamtramckstar.com) and the scanner archive page.

I'll be scanning Hamtramck constantly and Wayne County occasionally. Hourly summaries are now available in mp3 format and should play in just about any player.

I'm working on streaming the scanner live.

The Ballad of Ira Hayes

Written by Peter LaFarge
Recorded by Johnny Cash on 3/5/64

Ira Hayes,
Ira Hayes

CHORUS:
Call him drunken Ira Hayes
He won't answer anymore
Not the whiskey drinkin' Indian
Nor the Marine that went to war

Gather round me people there's a story I would tell
About a brave young Indian you should remember well
From the land of the Pima Indian
A proud and noble band
Who farmed the Phoenix valley in Arizona land

When the revolution needs a gym

gym2My gym consists of a jump rope, Cables, a sandbag , and a bicycle on a trainer.

The sandbag kit came with one big blue cordura bag and eight inner bags. I went down to the hardware store and bought three 50lb bags of construction sand for about $12. I filled two of the inside bags with 50lbs of sand and two with 25lbs. I tied and taped each bag near the top so the sand will be as loose as possible. It's a sandbag after all.

I put all 150lbs into the big bag and tried tried to deadlift it. What makes a sandbag so difficult to pick up is that you have to grab a handful of the outside of the bag with each hand to lift. There's no handles or bars so you really build hand strength.

I could pick up and shoulder the bag at 150lbs but only a couple of times. I removed the two 25lbs bags to make a more manageable 100lbs sandbag. So now I'm sholdering it and doing lunges, balancing it on my shoulders and doing squats, deadlifing it, and doing clean and jerks with it.

The jumprope and bike are self-explanatory. The cables are pretty simple too, mostly upper body, they're like the old spring sets only with surgical tubing, a cover, and cool plastic handles.

Stick it to snoops with tor and privoxy

More and more I'm finding my Google™ searches polluted by what they've learned about me. To combat this I'm experimenting with tor and privoxy running on Fedora.

As an added benefit, privoxy identifies and blocks popups and web-based malware.

"Tor aims to make traffic analysis more difficult by preventing websites, eavesdroppers, and even the onion routers themselves from tracing your communications online. This means Tor lets you decide whether to identify yourself when you communicate."

Privoxy is a web proxy with advanced filtering capabilities for protecting privacy, modifying web page content, managing cookies, controlling access, and removing ads, banners, pop-ups and other obnoxious Internet junk. Privoxy has a very flexible configuration and can be customized to suit individual needs and tastes. Privoxy has application for both stand-alone systems and multi-user networks.

The Tyranny of Party

"Look at the tyranny of party--at what is called party allegiance, party loyalty--a snare invented by designing men for selfish purposes--and which turns voters into chattles, slaves, rabbits, and all the while their masters, and they themselves are shouting rubbish about liberty, independence, freedom of opinion, freedom of speech, honestly unconscious of the fantastic contradiction; and forgetting or ignoring that their fathers and the churches shouted the same blasphemies a generation earlier when they were closing their doors against the hunted slave, beating his handful of humane defenders with Bible texts and billies, and pocketing the insults and licking the shoes of his Southern master." -- Mark Twain's Autobiography

-----

People's beliefs and convictions

"In religion and politics people's beliefs and convictions are in almost every case gotten at second-hand, and without examination, from authorities who have not themselves examined the questions at issue but have taken them at second-hand from other non-examiners, whose opinions about them were not worth a brass farthing." -- Autobiography of Mark Twain

Sirius | ST2 Starmate

I bought a ST2 Starmate Sirius radio to listen to Howard Stern. A couple of the other stations don't suck (yet).
